Google continues to work tirelessly to make its native apps more functional. New Google Messages features, revealed in the beta version, aim to improve the user experience. Details discovered in the app’s latest code (version 20251121) suggest that practical improvements are on the way, particularly in media management and the interface.
Media option added to Google Messages features
The most notable update the developers are working on relates to the media saving process. In the current version, saving a photo simply displays a “saved” notification. However, with the new update, an “Open” button is added to the notification bubble, allowing you to instantly open the saved file.
This feature eliminates the need to open the Gallery app to edit the saved image, check its metadata, or set it as your wallpaper. Clicking the “Open” button will prompt you to select the default app, expediting the process.
Another significant change to the app is the location sharing icon. The “Location” icon, which appears when you click the plus (+) icon in the chat screen, has been relabeled as “One-Time Location.” With this move, Google wants to clearly communicate to users that the data being shared is not live tracking, but only current, fixed coordinates.
The final interface touches up the AI assistant. The Gemini button on the screen is now larger than before. These updates, currently in beta, are yet to be announced, and the release date for the stable version remains to be seen.
